Not many people know but on top of being an author, I also go into my 8 yr. olds class and help her teacher sometimes with reading, writing or crafts. It's something I started doing last year and I plan on continuing until I can't anymore. I enjoy working with children and have all my life.
So it’s not really surprising that this whole thing came about. Let’s start with how I try to remember names. My daughter has a boy in her class named Alan. Easy for me to remember because of my character Nick Allen. But I always ask Alan if I’m spelling his name right. So pretty much Alan sat to do a project with me and told the boy next to him that I remember his name because I wrote a book about him. (Yeah, um, I’m pretty sure Nick Allen was not written about this little boy, lol).
This led to Mrs. Cattell, can you write a book about me? Echo that x19 children and it made for a fun time, lol. As it is the end of the school year, I told them that I would try to write a story about the class and not just one child at a time. Their teacher loved the idea and so, that lead to brainstorming….
Picture 19 children excited to have a story written about them and their ideas. And I had to include the ideas in the story. Here are just a few of what I was working with…
Their teacher doing the “Happy Dance”
A field trip
A tree monster
Ireland
Italy
Sharks
Scuba Diving
King, Queen, prince and princess
Pirates
And the list goes on….
So, did I do it? Yes I’m happy to say that today I wrote a story using all their names at least 3xs and all their ideas. It’s a silly story really, but I know they will love it and that’s all that matters.
Will I be writing children’s books in the future? I can safely say…no. As much fun as I had writing this story, children’s books are not for me. I’ll stick to my paranormal/sweet romance/YA/NA stories for now.
Peace, Love, and Hope
